The solution turned out to be "Charlotte's Web." "The Phantom Tollbooth" is another surefire win. When in doubt, simplify and go back to grade school. But I can vouch for "The Da Vinci Code." A very enjoyable book, albeit a hardback. I actually went to Barnes & Noble and bought a couple other books by him, that's how much I liked it.
