Boy, did he get the last laugh! What kind of bastard writes a novel that is designed with great intentionality to be addictive (all those clues that lead nowhere-- anticonfluential indeed!) and then kills himself before writing another? Here I am, suffering through Gaddis's "The Recognitions", waiting patiently for the next novel-- and it's never coming! I miss him so much already... why O why?

This is the best/most personal testimony of all the tributes I've read today. I feel I must extrapolate, both to myself and DFW:
Fuck You, you selfish, greedy, insatiable Motherfucker.

Here's a lovely post from one of his ex-students today this morning. Sounds like he was a good teacher (if not a troubled soul), and he probably would have enjoyed your letter.

This is so unbelievable. Unfortunately, I picked up Infinite Jest at a very difficult time in my life, probably the wrong time to read it. The book didn't make me a David Foster Wallace fan. I have to admit I was baffled by it. Although I do remember liking the tennis parts. Still, I know his writing resonated for many, many people. What an incredibly sad, horrible ending.
