Hi John, thanks for the comment. It's interesting to hear about what the group was like in the '70s!

When I was in the VGC in the mid-70s, there were a number of gay guys, but it was not out in the open who was and who wasn't. I only found out later that a friend from the Club is gay - he now sings in the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington. Our accompanist, Jim Richardson, was a founding member, and the first director of the Chorus. Sadly, Jim died of AIDS way too soon. My friend told me that he, Jim and a few other guys had had an interesting adventure on one of our tours. By the way, I am not gay, and was rather naive at the time - you would have had to hit me over the head for me to notice that there was anything sexual of any kind going on.

Hey Thom -- did you know that the Michigan, Harvard, and Virginia Glee Clubs are all performing together at a concert in Michigan this weekend? They're calling it "440 Years of Song": http://ummgc.org/o/tickets.php . Wish I could be there.

And the first time I came out to a fellow Club member (though it was not the first time I had ever come out to someone) was in a restaurant parking lot in Mobile, Alabama on a tour of the South, on the way to... New Orleans. I spent much of our day in New Orleans going gaga over a straight guy in the group. What is it about that city?

In the Harvard Glee Club in the early 80s, gay men already were clearly a "substantial minority" of the group, constituting probably a quarter to a third, I'd wager; it was my membership in that group that eased my own coming out process freshman year to a highly significant degree. Iin fact, the first time I admitted to anyone else I was gay was while walking through the French Quarter of New Orleans, on a Glee Club trip to a choral conference, with a group of fellow Glee Club members, all gay.
