Rules of the World

Very angering therapy session today, but also really great, in a sense.

What I learned: my desire to figure out the rules of how the world works (the rules that the closest people in my life already seem to know) is overpowered by my anger at having to do so and my desire not to.

  1. This seems like it would come with the territory, yourself being a gay man, and with that title considered an outcast in some parts. Would you say that you resent the “rules” against homosexuality in such a manner that your sexuality has you pitted against society?

Obviously, if that frustration grows to the point of anger, it will hinder thought to a degree. You could compare this at a more extreme level to the Black Panthers- they were insulted by the rules of society, so they were unable to relate to society. Perhaps this has led to the feeling of isolation among minorities (including homosexuals) more than the minority traits (or reactions to) themselves.

  2. Placental mammals show a strong correlation between between the length of gestation, weening, and overall development towards adulthood and their likelihood of possessing a more complex brain and mind than those of shorter developmental lengths. That’s one rule worth noting.

  3. If you figure them out, it would make for a good book. Cash in on the opportunity. I am still trying to figure out the lay of the land myself.

  4. I’ve been pondering this post for quite awhile because I’m not sure the world has only one set of rules, nor am I sure success always comes tot shoe who follow the prevailing norms. I always thought the real issue was finding the rules that would govern the life we want to create for ourselves while still accommodating whatever unavoidable societal expectations surround us. I find satisfaction comes from living by my rules much more than figuring out how to get along in someone else’s game.

  5. Where did you ever get the idea that the world works according to any sort of rules at all?

Yes, there are certain basic laws of nature that physicists have modeled mathematically. But I don’t think that’s what you mean. I think you’re actually looking for rules that govern human behavior. After spending some time pondering that problem (with perhaps as much anger as you’re experiencing), I’ve concluded that the closest you’ll get to figuring out any such rules is by studying chaos theory. Even then you won’t understand what the rules are– but you might find some comfort in the realization that there are no rules and that most everyone is at least as confused as you are.

    Feel better?
