Now that there’s definitely going to be a Hobbit movie as well as a sequel bridging the gap between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the question is: what’s going to be in the sequel?
But isn’t the time between THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS already covered in the prologue to THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING? I seem to remember a few minutes at the beginning of that movie devoted to telling the backstory of the ring and how it came to the Shire with Bilbo.
I think this sequel is, like most sequels, unnecessary. There’s really not much story in “and then Bilbo held onto the ring for X amount of years and lived a lovely life in Shire.”
I’m glad to hear that the second movie will be a bridging prequel, because I couldn’t figure out how they could turn The Hobbit into two full-length films. It’s an entertaining enough read, but it’s really just “And then this happened and then they went there and then they did this and so forth…”
Now, I just finished reading The Children of Hurin, and THAT would make a great movie - albeit a horribly bleak and depressing one!
I believe that the sequel should (and hopefully will) contain Aragorn’s pursuit of Gollum and Gollum’s escape from Mirkwood. It would be nice if Radagast the Brown had a bit of action in the movie as well.

True, but there’s some hints at the doings of other characters in a couple of appendices, according to the link.
