Barack Obama was elected president 38 days ago.
He won’t be inaugurated for another 39 days.
We are not even halfway through the transition period yet. God, this is taking forever.

You’re like a kid waiting for Christmas!
Inauguration Day will be here before you know it. Just take each day as it comes and Obama will be disappointing his supporters in no time.
I say this with no ill will, just that he received such messianic levels of hype that either he is the Messiah or he’s not going to be able to achieve everything his supporters believe he will.
The consolation, though, is that he’s not Bush. That in itself is change and hope enough :)
What do you mean by “his supporters”? That’s kind of vague.
Well, I left it intentionally vague. I guess I’m making a distinction between the people who think he will bring world peace and heal the sick, make the blind to see and the lame to walk on the one hand and people like me who I would describe as not so much supporters but well-wishers. If he turns out not to be able to remedy all our nation’s ills in the first 100 days, I will not be disappointed or surprised.
There are a lot of people, however, who think a new golden age will dawn on January 20th. Maybe it will — stranger things have happened — but when politics and politicians are concerned you can never be too skeptical or too cynical.
This is just my own personal observation.
I know lots of people.
I know lots of people who volunteered for the campaign.
I’ve never met a single person who came anywhere near considering Obama a messiah.
I have heard such persons being described, of course. All of us have.
I’ve just never met one.

It’s not that I don’t like Obama. I would have voted for him if I’d been in the country and if I thought New York’s electoral votes were in enough jeopardy to justify going to White Plains to get an absentee ballot. When your predecessor is the Worst President in History, you cannot help but win.
Obama, however, is incapable — both personally and because of his place and role in the system — to bring us the change that this country really needs. If he ends torture in our name, gets us out of Iraq, and brings some economic relief for the working class and health care for everyone who needs it, then he will have exceeded my expectations. I maintain no illusions that these would only be band-aid remedies for the real serious problems we’re facing.
