Ick

1) Tonight I attend a five-and-a-half-hour opera. Wish me luck.

2) I’m unemployed now. Really caught between trying to enjoy this time and looking for a job. Trying to do both. Voices other than my own are in my head, telling me what to do. That’s always been one of my biggest problems. I’m woefully mis-calibrated.

3) I’ve considered getting a Ph.D. in history and getting a library science degree but I don’t think I actually want to do those things. I really just want to write a biography/history book. But that would still require having a job for the foreseeable future.

4) Unhappiness and anxiety on a blog are so unbecoming. But I’m really feeling them right now.

  1. Library Science! Library Science!

Really a very simple graduate program, for several reasons: typically, the profs haven’t been in the field for years, and are therefore more concerned with theory than application (Oh, and whatever lastest whizbang theory floating in the trades by similarly removed academic types). Also, curiously, there always seems to be lots of students in the graduate program with ZERO LIBRARY EXPERIENCE so it’s easy to be a star.

The work is the good part though- it’s always something different (and how!), you get to work with actual *people*, and unlike many workplaces, there’s always plenty of stuff around to keep your mind alive.

Having said that, though, have you ever actually worked in a library? It tends to be nothing like what anyone would expect… if you’re interested, I’d say take a part-time or substitute position and get a feel for it before you make any drastic commitments…
